Now starting corruption has been lowered to 60%, so things are much more manageable. Trade income is exempt from corruption, so was pretty much the only money I had. When the game launched, WRE had an 80% corruption penalty at the start of the game, that could get to 100% if Honoriarius became corrupt. The trade income with ERE is one reason I always try to keep the alliance with them and protect them from the Sassanids. By fighting them their, you avoid the risk they will raze Roman settlements within the traditional Rhine-Danube frontier. At the crossroads of two mountain passes from the east, Attila and his bunch of stacks will pass by Nitralwha on their way to invade WRE.
It doesn't look like it, but Nitralwha is a chokepoint into Central/Western Europe. If a hot war with the Huns can be delayed until Attila comes, I will have fortified Pannonia and often made Nitralwha (the Quadian home region) a fortified outpost. I have to scramble to wipe out the intruding stacks before they raze Italian cities. The most hair raising part of a WRE campaign for me is when you have let the "peaceful" Huns into your lands, sight seeing around Italy and suddenly the tourists decide that they want to take all this Italian civilisation for their own. The Hun campaign AI seems to get more aggressive when Attila spawns or maybe they just have more concentrated stacks. If it does break out, often I find it becomes a kind of "cold war" - where you can put stacks in fortified stance and deter them from pushing west. But often you can avoid war with the Huns for quite a long time - they have so many other enemies. As ERE, it is a Herculean task, trying to save the WRE, as it falls so fast in AI hands.Īn early war with the Huns would make life really tough for WRE and I can see you might have to give up Pannonia then. As WRE, I will send armies to conquer the Sassands they attack ERE - it makes the over-stretched WRE position even more tense. What I like to do is play a kind of "co-op" campaign with the sister AI faction. With both Roman factions, you can stabilise and have a really fun period before Attila arrives, creating a new Pax Romana. My second favorite is ERE - it's very similar to WRE mid-game but has less of the gruelling manual settlement defences. It might sound overwhelming, managing so much territory but you are so starved of resources, you can only do a few things every turn - the fun part is playing "triage", deciding what to focus your attention on that can be life saving, and what is either hopeless or can wait. It's trying to protect and manage 64 starting settlements that makes WRE so engrossing. Withdrawing to Spain or Italy just seems pointless - go play Rome 2 if you want to play a small Roman state and traditional expansionary TW campaign. Those guides were written when WRE had a crippling 80% corruption, it's been lowered to 60% but even on launch, you did not need to give up anything on VH.
What I recommend is ignore all those early guides that tell you to abandon territory - fight for everything, even Britain. The Divine Triumph victory condition requires you to destroy 40 factions, but as WRE you do not need to go out of your way to fulfill it as that is about the number of AI factions that will invade and try to destroy you. Western Romans are my favorite Attila faction - there is just something compelling about trying to prevent the fall of Rome and it is nice to play a "turtle" faction where the AI will throw everything at you, trying to take you down.
